May 28/2012 Ferrol to Pontedueme

You have to walk around this entire inlet to get to the far side.
Leaving Ferrol along the seaside path
Views along the way

We left Santiago and got the first bus to Ferrol to start the Camino Ingles. Ferrol is a big seaport and attracted pilgrims from Scandinavia, Flanders, England, Scotland, and Ireland. The distance from Ferrol to Santiago is 118 k. We arrived in Ferrol at 1100. It was sunny and warm. We had ahead of us 25k to Pontedeume. This Camino Ingles can be divided up into many kilometer segments according to your ability. The first albergue is in Neda at about 12 k which you can start from and still receive your Compestela. The phone number is posted on the front door of the albergue. Often the the door will not be opened till 1900. The second albergue is at 26 k, at Pontedeume. The Camino leaving town is well marked taking you along the water front through parks with great views of inlets and boats. You go through several forests and finally drop back down to the sea. You are never on the main roads always back roads. The footing is good.  In order to keep you off the main roads, you do a lot of up and down hills. We were tired when we arrived because we started late and it was warm. With a lot of help from the natives we found the albergue. We called the number posted on the door and found out it didn't open till 1930. We went off to eat and drink a cold glass of beer. We met a man that had done two of the caminos by bicycle and on foot. He described what tomorrow and the next few days would be like. Basically many ups and downs. We got into the albergue, it is a new one. We had our shower and collapsed into our bunks. It is 2100 and there are only 4 of us here. We will start tomorrow at first light.

There were only four of us so we had our choice of bunks

By 1800 we were famished and thirsty.
